The Future
In this, our second Sustainability Report, we presented our strategy to implement sustainability and several highlights that illustrate our progress. We are working to better understand the sustainability impacts of our business by:
- Using our product labels to educate consumers about wellness and nutrition and the value of balanced lifestyle choices
- Expanding our efforts in coffee sustainability to fully encompass our global coffee business
- Assessing upstream and downstream environmental impacts, including our impact on water resources and the environmental aspects with the use and enjoyment of our personal brewed coffee beverages
- Reviewing, and adjusting as appropriate, the goals that we’ve set for reduction of water and energy usage, and wastes, especially wastes destined for landfill disposal
- Optimizing our packaging while preserving the integrity and safety of our products
- Working with our suppliers and our first-tier customers to find eco-efficient packaging that can be reused or recycled
- Working with governments, communities and technical experts to find cost-effective renewable energy sources to power our operations
- More completely determining our total carbon footprint beyond the carbon-equivalent emissions associated with our stationary consumption of natural gas and electricity
- Rationalizing our raw material and product transportation network to be both process- and energy-efficient
- Conducting the follow-up to our fiscal 2009 global employee engagement survey; using the results to continue to shape our culture
- Using the opportunities of meeting with business leaders and other stakeholders to improve dialog with internal and external stakeholders
- Sharing our work, successes and challenges with all of our stakeholders through www.saralee.com.
