The Sara Lee Foundation For more than 25 years, Sara Lee Corporation and the Sara Lee Foundation have been dedicated to playing a meaningful role in community life. The Sara Lee Foundation was founded in 1981 to formalize Sara Lee’s dedication to community service. Since then, the Foundation has grown and set a new standard for corporate giving, touching millions of lives, helping those in need and fostering artistic expression.
Giving—cash contributions, product donations and volunteerism—is an important part of the culture at Sara Lee. The Sara Lee Foundation concentrates the majority of its support on organizations and causes in Greater Metropolitan Chicago, site of the corporation’s headquarters. Outside of Chicago, giving is decentralized, as Sara Lee divisions—across the country and around the world—work with community agencies to support programs addressing critical local needs.

Sara Lee North American Law Department PPP project – 2008-2009 The best way to help other people is to use your own talents and skills. In the legal department at our Downers Grove, Ill., headquarters, they understood this particularly well. They set up several programs within the Pro Bono Legal Services Initiative to better understand the complex legal world.
The Sara Lee North American Law Department is committed to providing pro bono legal services for the underserved. They have put their efforts in several programs under the framework of PPP 2008. One of these is “Lawyers in the Classroom.” The team taught 7th and 8th grade classes about the U.S. constitution. One of the volunteer attorneys said she had her doubts about teaching children about the constitution, but was positively surprised at the receptiveness of the 7th and 8th graders. Through this learning, the students develop critical thinking and are encouraged to examine all sides of an issue. It gives them a sense of personal responsibility, respect for authority and also remedies some common misconceptions about the legal system. The legal team also put their efforts in helping individuals with past arrests or convictions who have demonstrated positive life changes.
