Norman R. Sorensen - International Asset Management and Accumulation, the Principal Financial Group and chairman of Principal International, Inc, director since 2007

NormanNorman R. Sorensen is president – international asset management and accumulation, the Principal Financial Group, president and chairman of Principal International, Inc., and executive vice president of Principal Financial Group, Inc. and Principal Life Insurance Company. He was elected a member of the board of directors of Sara Lee Corporation in 2007 and serves on the Compensation and Employee Benefits, Corporate Governance and Nominating and Policy Committees.

Sorensen joined the company in 1998 and has been an executive officer of Principal Financial Group and of Principal Life Insurance Company since 2001. Previously he was a senior executive at American International Group, Inc. (AIG) from 1989 to 1997.  

Sorensen serves as chairman of the International Insurance Society (IIS). He also is a member of the Financial Services Roundtable and the Council on Foreign Relations.

Sorensen earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) and is a graduate of Columbia University’s Executive Program for International Managers.
